Scrambling involves ground that is steep but never overly technical -
it forms the threshold between hill-walking and rock climbing. One of
the great things about scrambling is the ability to move quickly and
cover a lot of ground in the mountains. When ridge traversing it can
feel like being on the summit all day!
Easier scrambles (grade1) are usually completed without the need of a
rope although you'll need to use both hands and feet to make progress.
Grade 2 scrambles generally have short sections of trickier ground that involve the use of 'short-roping' to make progress.
Grade 3 scrambles are similar to the easiest rock climbs and can involve pitched sections where rock climbing rope-work is used, however mountain boots are normally worn.
Making fast and efficient progress on this ground is an art-
form and
becoming competent at scrambling is an essential step for those who want
to climb in the Alps and beyond.
Our scrambling courses can take place in Scotland, North Wales and Spain.
The classic venue for UK scrambling is the Isle of Skye, which offers the most consistently challenging ridge traversing in the British Isles. Glencoe and Fort William are also excellent.
Also popular is the Sierra de Bernia Ridge in Spain - this can be
included as part of a climbing course, along with via
ferrata too.
