A winter mountaineering course takes you
into high Scotland's mountains
where you can learn and use the skills required to ascend Scottish Munros in winter conditions.
Winter conditions in Scotland can mean snow, ice, high winds and tough weather. On a winter mountaineering course you'll learn how to travel safely through one of the toughest, most beautiful environments on earth.
During a winter mountaineering course you may venture onto
steep
ground but it will never be technical climbing ground (see winter
climbing courses for that). The main tools of
winter mountaineering are
a single alpine ice-axe and a pair of crampons - although there is a
host of other equipment you'll get to grips with.
Our winter mountaineering courses enable you to learn all the skills of a Scottish winter skills course and also to put these skills into practice in the context of quality mountain days. There is a greater emphasis on judgement and decision making and progression towards becoming a competent, independent winter mountaineer able to travel with confidence and safety in Scotland’s Winter Mountains.
Our Scottish winter mountain courses can be based from
Fort William
or Aviemore. A comprehensive winter mountaineering course would normally
last up to five days. You may like to factor in a rest day too so that
you get the most out of your course.
The content of your course is ultimately up to you -
contact us to discuss things further. As with all of our courses,
everything is tailor-made to suit your needs so if you have something in
particular in mind you can choose to be based in another area. If you
would like to discuss the course content, please feel free to e-mail us
