SCOTTISH WINTER MOUNTAINEERING COURSES

Ben Lui in the afternoon sun

A sunny winter’s day on Ben Lui

Our Scottish base is Aberfeldy in Perthshire, very close to the geographical centre of Scotland. The advantage of this location is that it is within easy reach of both the Eastern and Western Highland areas.

The Cairngorms, Glencoe, Craig Meagaidh and Ben Nevis are all easily accessible.

There are also dozens of Munros such as Ben Lawers, Meall Nan Tarmachan and Schiehallion right on our doorstep.

When winter mountaineering in Scotland, the weather greatly affects where you choose to be - if westerly winds prevail (as is often the case) then the local area and the Cairngorms (a short drive away) generally provide the best conditions. If the conditions favour the western Highlands, it is only a short trip to the mountains surrounding the Bridge of Orchy, Glencoe or Lochaber.

As with all of our courses, everything is tailor-made to your needs so if you have something particular in mind you can choose to based in that area.

2 Day Winter Skills Course

Get to grips with the tools of the trade: ice axe, boots, crampons, map and compass. Learn to cut and kick steps in snow, use an ice axe to protect yourself on snow slopes, stop a slide by self-arresting, navigate in Scottish winter conditions, and more. A short but intense course packed full of information.

5 Day Winter Skills Course

This course includes everything covered on the 2 day course but allows more time to work on and perfect the skills. The skills will also be learned and consolidated in the context of quality winter mountain days.
